Welcome

Hi,

I’m Heather and I became a mommy just over 10 years ago to two amazing, brave and strong girls. I’m pretty sure no one’s parenting journey goes as planned out in their heads back in their 20s. Ours quickly (during pregnancy) took us down paths we never anticipated in our wildest dreams.

Today I am the proud mama of a Hailey (10) who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just 17 months old. And Jessica (5) Diagnosed at birth with Intestinal Failure due to Short Bowel Syndrome.

Those are the big two medical diagnoses but both girls also have secondary medical issues as well. Needless to say, SickKids Hospital in Toronto is our second home. In fact it was Jess’s first home! She lived there her first 4.5 months from birth. Never did we anticipate when we stepped into the SickKids E.R. On December 13, 2011 that this place would quickly mean the world to us. And that is why our family is so passionate about advocating and supporting this magical place.

I’m sure many of you who follow our private accounts are aware of our family’s passion to help those organizations who have helped us, been our lifelines and literally saved our girls lives. Everything we or the girls participate in is their choice. They love their roles as youth ambassadors so much. And those who know Hailey know she LOVES to talk! She is always the first to jump at the chance to use her voice to support the causes that are near and dear to our family.

Over the years, Danny and I have both dabbled with the idea of sharing our story, our journey of navigating parenthood as what we call “Medical Parents”. What better time then during quarantine 2020!

However, I am NOT a writer, I have never done anything like this before so please be patient as I am learning as I go. Also most of this is being done from my iPhone between medical mommying as the girls are both home from school this year.

If you’re interested in learning about blood sugars, insulin dosing, carb counting, pumping, cgms, ketones, food restrictions, TPN, central lines (CVLs), IV pumps, blood thinners, blood clots, hospital admissions and surgeries while trying to balance family life with a LOT of coffee, wine and Diet Coke this blog is for you :).
